Last week Anupiya (Sacramentum) gave me an offer to take me to Kandy for Esala Perehera as I have never seen it live ever before.
Since we decided on it on thursday Anupiya had to make arrangements in a very short period of time. He had planned to take me on train which is never gonna be an easy task on a friday. Two cousins of Anupiya (Who are regular travellers on train) were also supposed to join us late (in the train). They will be having seats as they had already booked their seats. But we had no tickets booked hence, won’t be having any seats as well. We had to come to the fort railway station an hour before the train was supposed leave to secure ourselves a spot in the train. About half n hour later we were joined by Anupiya’s cousin brother (works for Sampath Bank) and cousin sister (works for Bank of Ceylon). We thought of sharing the seats on shift basis, since we had only two accomodate ourselves. And the first one of it was for me and anupiya’s cousin sister. which ultimately turned down to be the first and last at that. Anyway that was a good example of hospitability of a man of his kind.
Our train reached Kandy around 7.30 pm. Crowd was flocking to Kandy from every part of the country, Security was tightened in kandy resulting in checking not only for tickets this time even for our belongings including our body as well.
Anyway after waitnig in the cue for atleast half n hour for checking we strait away went to Anupiya’s Grand Place as we were too late and too tired then we just had a wash had dinner and went assleep.
Next day we got up early in the morning a fresh day wow Lonely Coder is at Katugastota, little away from kandy. The place was really cool and the breeze was so soft that it could freshen both mind and soul. In the morning I could descover that most of anupiya’s aunts were sharing the same property to build their own homes.
Since Perahera is supposed to start late in the dusk we were free for whole day, we thought of sticking to Grand Place and watching a movie. We watched The Hunted which was a fantastic action film worth watching.
After watching the movie we went for a walk down the road hind side of the road was Mahaveli River flowing pridely the longest river in Srilanka giving a picture perfect post. We went upto a ground which had a gymnasium as well and then decided to return back as the road was under going reconstruction at the far end spraying a big puff of Dust in the area.
On our way back we met one of Piya’s Aunt who was just getting back home after a medical checkup, invited us for a drink perhaps this is the aunty that anupiya sent his cake with whome works at British Council Language Center.
Going for Perahera
then we went to piya’s grand place, had lunch and went to cousin bro’s home whome we met at in train. Cousin brother, his younger brother me and anupiya are ready to go for the perhera.
But little while later we were joined by Charly(Works for Commercial Bank), anupiya’s friend at St.Anthonys college. We had a long way to walk through to reach all the way to Daldha maligawa. Still we didn’t feel any tired thanks to charly who remembered most of there school time adventures at St.Anthonys and to go with it was Anupiya’s Cousin who also hd some intersting memoris from his school time. As we were closing Dhaladha Maligawa we stopped at Pivas, had some hoppers(not so with charly who had heavy diet) and shared a few 7UP’s.
Unfortunately, Lonely Coder and the rest of the Gangbang will not be alowed in by the offcials. As already the Maligawa premises and the rest of the roads which the paegent was supposed to travel was filled up with people.
But we’ll never give up we thought of climbing a near by hill atart watching it all the way. When we climbed that particular hill there was also a pretty descent crowed but still we could manage ourslves finally!!!.
The paegent was already begun and Tuskers were passing maligawa as we reached there. We could see a nice view of whole Kandy marvallousely decorated with lights specially for the occasion.
Then we could witness a bit of kandyan dance to follow it up was people who rotate fire wheels on their hands an even on their heads, Also the fantastically caparisoned elephants walk through pridely along the streets of kandy. It was real eyecandy of a sight, unique to Kandy which I will remember for years and cherish.
We watched the paegent for around an hour and started walking all the way down to Anupiya’s cousin’s place where we were supposed to stay over night.
The other day we had Kiribath at Anupiya’s cousins place. And left there to go to piya’s grand place, had a wash and start watching TV.
Then again today it’s Sunday where my mates at IIT go on paper. So we took Sunady Times and started searching for the article. Sadly we couldn’t spot it hence we gave it up(But later I found it when I returened back to Colombo) and start watching John F Kennady(JFK), a film which was into the investigantion of the murder of JFK.
Today we are invited at one of anupiya’s aunt’s place for luch we went early and had lunch and took of from anupiya’s Grand place. It was time to say good bye to Kandy from Lonely Coder. I thanked everyone of Anupiya’s family for giving me such wonderfull accomodation throught out last couple of days. And around 1.45 pm we left from there to Kandy railway station. We were again acompanied by Anupiya’s cousin sister, cousin brother, and charly. The train was bit reluctent to go fast at the beginig but a little while later, they were all sort out and the train catched pase. But we were least worried with it as we had lot of fun in train with no such crowd present in the train.
The whole crew returned back to Colombo around 6.30 pm. Wow it was like a dream trip for Lonely Coder. Once again I thank Anupiya for taking me all the way to kandy.
